"Ambient Artist Da Pacem Releases “Clange Mysticum,” his Symmetrical Records debut album
Aaron Hansen is an ambient music producer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Lincoln, NE, and now resides with his wife in Omaha, NE. Da Pacem is his solo project, and Clange Mysticum is his debut album under the small Asheville, NC based indie-label Symmetrical Records.
Clange Mysticum is one of those records that can be appreciated in small segments just as much as in its entirety. The music develops slowly, unafraid to linger on a particularly effective sound for as long as necessary -- the creeping analog loops of "The Guardian," for example, start sparse and airy, transporting you to some other place far away. A single tone emerges and serves as a vessel, here to take you deeper into this auditory journey. When the distortion drops near the midpoint, its done in such a way where all layers are visible and distinguishable. These airy mixes become something of a signature to Da Pacem’s tracks, and it’s a progression that can be found throughout this long play album.
During its most delicate moments, one can hear, through an immersive soundscape, some hidden melody, yearning to break through, yet blissfully content in its centrifuge. Pianos rise and fall, suspended in time, and one might imagine landscapes, quiet mountains of Iceland or soundless waterfalls. These are the visuals that this music tends to evoke.
It’s highly recommended that you listen to Clange Mysticum on headphones. It's the kind of album you need to get physically close to in order to understand. When one cranks Da Pacem’s music, the vibrations of the deepest bass trigger the feelings as if one were living inside an earthquake or standing at the base of a volcano. You can feel the rumble in your cheekbones, a tiny sound massage similar to that moment when you completely lock into a centralized OM at the end of a yoga session. One track to repeat is, appropriately enough, called "8589081113 (Continuum)". Enjoy letting this sound bury you.
Clange Mysticum is perfect for sitting at home with quiet retrospection, or driving down a winding mountain road, rain bouncing off of the windshield in front of you. It’s one of those albums that becomes a soundtrack to your waking day, and is an album that can be enjoyed again and again. Much like a great movie, the more you return, the more surprises and secrets are uncovered.
